I started a new job last week as Senior Editor at HealthCentral, a website that offers inspiration and information to those who live with different chronic conditions. I will be covering Mental Health & Wellness, Brain & Nerve Health, and Skin Health. In addition to editing pieces from various contributors I will be writing about trends in depression and mental health. You can find my posts at this link, but I will also be publishing teasers here so you can click through to the full story. My first piece was covering the tragic death of Kate Spade. It made me want to know more about the relationship between success and depression. Here’s what I found.
The death of iconic fashion designer Kate Spade of an apparent suicide inside her Park Avenue apartment in Manhattan shocked fans of her work and begs the questions: What would cause a woman who seemingly ‘had it all’ to reach such a point of desperation? And why does suicide take the lives of so many of the world’s most accomplished and successful people?
We think that success ensures happiness and protects a person from mental distress and suicide. However, the reality is that those of us chasing the corner office or the initials VP after our name may be more prone to depression and anxiety than the average Joe bussing tables at the local diner. In fact, some research indicates that CEOs may be depressed at more than double the rate of the general public.
Excellent editorial, Therese. Best wishes for a
fulfilling new editorial job!
Suicide is much more common with people who have A.C.E.scores of more than 1. I’ve been collaborating with MD’s, PhD’s, patients and their families since the early days of the A.C.E. research and studies. With over 1.3 million participants and scientific articles in JAMA, support from the CDC and NIH, replicated and utilized in over 100 countries in schools, police stations, medical institutions and universities, it is essential for anyone living or working with depression, anxiety, addictions and suicide prevention. My book, Your Inner Voice (at Amazon) has exact strategies to help people that are clinically-proven and for all ages and stages of personal development through the worst of times as well as the (seemingly) best of times.
“Success, Depression, and Suicide” and I would add Stigma.
Thanks for sharing.
Suicide now in teens looks like very normal. They take this decision because they do not take the proper cure to deal with it, they do not even talk to someone onto this. They do not share their problems with someone that can help them cure their problem. In this one can take help of a telephonic psychic like Martine Voyance at http://www.martine-voyance.com/tarifs. They can better understand the problem as they can have a peek into your past as well as future and there is no embarrassment of sharing the problem as you would be talking on the phone.
