Thomas Merton’s Prayer

I pray Thomas Merton’s prayer every day for discernment. In case you’re not familiar with it, I thought I’d share it here.

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahed of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that
I think I am following Your will does not mean that I am
actually doing so.

But I believe that the desire to please You
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that, if I do this, You will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.

Therefore I will trust You always though I may seem to be lost
and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for You are ever with me,
and You will never leave me to face my perils alone.

  1. Dear Therese,
I wanted to thank you for all you do, but especially for this prayer this morning. I have been going through a very “dark night of the soul” and it did help to read this. You are an inspiration to me as I try to keep my head above water. I wanted to let you know, since I know you suffer from depression, too, that you are such a great help, whether or not it may seem so to you at the time – sort of like what this prayer is saying. Take care and many blessings to you, Terilee

  2. Therese,
I thank Ggod that you are here. I appreciate your courage, honesty and faith. You are one of the people who I read every day and am again thankful that you are here.

      1. Inspiring website, Therese. Thanks for you courage to follow the path through the dark tunnel.
